Modern Farmhouse Basics

When I think of modern farmhouse style, I imagine comfort, neutrals and minimal accessories. It feels like this trend in home decor has grown in the past few years, especially with all the design shows on HGTV. Many people use the term farmhouse loosely. Some home decor lovers have more of a rustic farmhouse or a classic farmhouse vibe. When I imagine the classic farmhouse style, I immediately think of one of my favorite bloggers & new mama, Liz Marie Galvan. However, the modern farmhouse is best displayed in the blog and Instagram of Katie Staples from Halfway Wholeistic.

The basics of modern farmhouse can be achieved very easily with a few simple steps.

  • Start with a neutral palette. This will help you achieve the base for your modern farmhouse. If you want to add in some color you can do that after you determine your base color. My favorite color palette to play with is different tones of gray.
  • Add texture and dimension. The neutral base will pop once you add in different textures with pillows, wood, and blankets. Don’t be afraid to mix linen with wool textures, etc. The more texture you have the more your neutral palette will stand out. Leather and wicker can add major texture and dimension to your space.
  • Bring the outside in. Use different mediums to make the home feel warm and inviting. Wood, black iron, and stone can help with this.
  • Accessorize appropriately. In my opinion, less is more. I feel like modern farmhouse vibes should have minimal accessories. The more you add the more the design turns into something else. Also, you can leave your space feeling cluttered.
  • Use layers when needed. Rugs and different textures layered can help build the room. I would love to layer rugs in my living room, but I have dogs and rugs get nasty in my house. Jute, cowhide, and hand-loomed rugs can make the space look put together.
