House Plants for the Beginner

Spring is the time when we are ready to bring in new life to the house! Greenery and plants are the best way to get your space ready for spring. I LOVE having plants around the house, but I definitely do not have a green thumb. In fact, I typically kill everything I buy. My husband begs me to get faux plants, but I cannot resist a beautiful, real plant in the house. After much trial and error I have decided to share the four, easiest plants to keep alive.

Succulents

If you have ever had a succulent you know they are the easiest plant EVER to keep alive. You can leave for days and forget about them. They require very little water. I typically water my succulents when the soil starts to get very dry and crumbly. You will have to work to kill one of these!

Cactus

Similar to the succulents, the cacti are very easy to keep around the house. They are very drought tolerant. I have a cactus on my porch that I have watered once in about six months and it is thriving. If you are not home a lot, I would recommend getting a succulent or cactus as your beginner house plant.

Mother-in-law’s Tongue

A couple years ago I got one of these at Ikea, and I was able to keep the plant alive for SO long. In fact, since I switch decor so often I was ready to get rid of this guy. They require very little water and sunlight next to a window will give them everything they need. These plants are also drought tolerant, meaning they require very little water.

Fiddle Leaf Fig

This plant is my absolute favorite! I have had two of these, and unfortunately they didn’t last too long. In the past my mistake has been getting one of these guys, and then leaving for a week long trip. I come back and the leaves are starting to turn brown and withering. If you are new to the house plant business, I would recommend trying one of the other three plants for a starter. The fiddle leaf fig can be a little harder to maintain. This is one of the plants I would consider going faux with.
